Night photography presents a number of challenges. While the trees are bright enough to get a snapshot with a camera, to get truly high quality pictures I took the steps detailed below. These worked for me in the situation, but they aren’t set rules. Actually I would be interested to know if anyone disagrees or has additional tips.

Winterlichter (4/7)
This is my absolute favorite picture from the entire shoot. The island is called the Vogelinsel or bird island and is a refuge for sea ravens and flamingos. If you enlarge the picture you can see the birds in the trees.

Happy Easter!
This picture from Winterlichter shows a part of the park that was lit up in bright pastel colors, with illuminated tubes handing down lit from the inside. You could walk through these tubes. It was a magical forest filled with light. The inner child in me took over and I ran through the hanging tubes, pushing them from side to side and watching how the movement changed the light. The scene reminds me of something I would dream.
Winterlichter (2/7)
The night I chose to spend in the park taking photos was Fasching Dienstag – fat Tuesday. The weather was cold and damp – I couldn’t feel my fingers after the first 10 minutes – and there was a slight breeze. Most people were celebrating at a festival in the town center, so park was nearly empty. A few schoolchildren were leaving as I entered.
Winterlichter (1/7)
As winter draws to a close and spring begins, I am sharing a series of pictures that I took a at the Winterlichter exhibit at Mannheim Luisenpark in February. This is the second year I visited and enjoyed the lights very much. Again this year, I went twice. Once to enjoy the lights as a social event, and a second time with my camera and tripod to try and capture the magic.
