I cherish little relics of the past that live on today. The Kristallspiegelsaal, or crystal mirror hall, belongs to a hotel and restaurant in the town of Altenahr, Germany. In this small town in the Ahr Valley, tradition lives on. I wasn’t able to find out when the this opened, but it looks like early 1970’s to me. I think about all of the fun times that have been had here, the drunken dramas, the meals eaten together with friends and family. I also wonder how much longer a place like this will survive.

The glow of the Alps is soothing. In general, I find the mountains to be relaxing and peaceful. When stressed, I often shut my eyes and think of myself somewhere in the mountains. Living relatively close to the Alps, I have been able to visit them quite often. What I really like about this picture are the colors. The dark green at the bottom and the dark blue at the top in contrast with the pastel colors in between. The moon shines bright and the mountains are aglow. What is your peaceful place?

After more than a year-long break, I will be posting regularly again! I have a backlog of photography and some new ideas for this space, so stay tuned
The full moon shines bright in this picture, though looking smaller than it appears through the eye. The city sky and the clouds show amplify the hazy brightness. The leafless trees are also illuminated, but unnervingly and unnaturally from the wrong side. They were illuminated by street lights, which was amplified by the long exposure. It was challenging to get an exposure that didn’t overexpose the moon too much, yet showed the details of the trees. After trying many different exposures, without bracketing and editing, I decided that this was the best look – the moon still overexposed but in a way that shows its brightness in the sky.

I would like to wish you a very Merry and Peaceful Christmas.
Thank you for all the likes, comments, and support over the past year here, on Facebook and on Instagram. I’d be honored if you would follow me in 2017, I will be sharing more pictures starting in January.
The picture above was taken on December 20, 2016, in Mannheim on the main shopping road, looking towards the water tower. I think it captures the holiday spirit quite well.
Merry Christmas and a healthy, peaceful 2017.
I submitted this to flickr’s “Best Shot 2016” contest. I had quite a few shots that I really liked, so I posted them to Facebook and asked for feedback. First I am humbled by the response, but also very appreciative that so many people took the time out to give me their feedback. It was also interesting to see which pictures didn’t get any likes and which ones evoked an overwhelming response.
