Another picture from the trip to the Ahr Valley last November. I took think while doing a short hike on the Red Wine Trail, which is a nice trail through the vineyards and steep hills of the Ahr Valley. There are excellent trails and this November day was warm for the time of year.
I am constantly amazed at the things that can be discovered in this world. The caves at Škocjan really blew me away. It is one of the largest cave systems in the world, and the caves have an underground river running through it. It was interesting to move through the cave and progress deeper into it and hear the water echoing. One interesting fact is that it is really hard to tell how big the “room” you are in is because you have no reference points. When the tour guide told us what could fit in the cave, we were all astounded.
The Seven Sisters Waterfall is located in the Geiranger Fjord in Norway. It is a beautiful sight, the steep walls of the fjord and the water cascading over it making for a dramatic landscape. The waterfall is 820 ft/250 m. The folklore says that the streams of the waterfall each represents one of seven beautiful sisters. The waterfall on the other side of the fjord is shaped as a bottle, supposedly because it asked each of the seven sisters to marry him. When they all declined, he became an alcoholic. The Norwegians are very creative with their fairy tales, I guess such a landscape simply inspires the imagination.
It finally snowed a bit this week. It was only a few flurries, but it still brought a smile to my face. I love snow. I have a lot of good memories associated with snowstorms – listening to the radio to find out of school was closed, building forts in the snow, hot chocolate. To this day I still turn into a kid when it snows. And I even enjoy shoveling snow. I find winter to be so much more enjoyable when the landscape is covered in white, as the brightness of the snow takes away from the dreary darkness of winter.
No matter how much one plans a trip, unexpected things will happen. More often than not, these have led to the most pleasant experiences in my travels. I have shared a few photos from Krka National Park in Croatia. I was so stunned by the park’s beauty, I am sharing another. Some days everything comes today. The light was perfect, the weather beautiful, and the park is gorgeous. That makes it easy to take good pictures. I normally wouldn’t have gotten this shot, either, but our little tour boat broke down. Since we were stationary, I was able to get this shot. I really like it because it looks like something from the set of a movie (actually this park was the setting for the Winnetou films).
