Metz, France is a beautiful city on the Moselle River. I have very fond memories of visiting it while on my year abroad, and have been drawn back a number of times. The city shows a number of different architectural styles, reminders of the chaotic history of the city. In this picture you see the Moyen Pont (Old Bridge), which was built in the 13th century and the Temple Neuf (new temple), an early 20th century Protestant church.
Krka National Park is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The park is a protected area around the Krka river. There are a series of rapids and waterfalls, and island with a monastery on it, and a gorge with stunning cliffs. It is simply beautiful. If you have the opportunity, plan a visit. Even if you can’t pronounce Krka, it is worth a visit.
In Zadar, Croatia this summer the weather was beautiful. Warm, sunny, dry. The old town was alive with people. As I was looking for things to photograph I saw these two ladies chatting and enjoying the nice summer afternoon. I wanted to taken them alone, as I thought the symmetry would make for an appealing picture. Instead, the little girl with the ice cream cone walked into the picture. I like the effect it has. It gives a bit of movement in the picture. And innocence.
The concept that we can capture the sun’s energy is quite amazing. In Zadar, Croatia the Sun Salutation is a public art installation that uses solar cells to collect the sun’s energy, and then releases it overnight in the form of a light show that is shaped by the wave activity below. It is fascinating to see. Even more fascinating was the mood during a beautiful sunset. The lights seemed to brighten as the sun disappeared, the crowds grew louder cheering the moving art. The sun had just set but was greeting us.
The walk up to the top Schloßberg in Graz, Austria was quiet and peaceful. Halfway up I noticed this starfish-shaped leaf on the ground. I guess since I was on vacation, it reminded me of finding starfish on the beach as a kid. The way the leaf was laying there, it seemed like it was standing up. It seemed alive. And a bit isolated, like the starfish on the beach.
