The Little Mermaid statue is one of Copenhagen’s landmarks. It is located a bit of a distance outside the center, along the waterfront and near a beautiful park. Tourists flock to see it, and often you cannot get a good picture of the statue without a bunch of other tourists in the way. People are often disappointed in how little the statue is.
The Little Mermaid is a very melancholy story. The mermaid longs to be human, longs for the prince, and longs to be different. This statue captures the melancholy nature of the story well. I tried to capture the melancholy in the picture as well. I wanted the statue in silhouette to add drama and I decreased the clarity in Lightroom to give it a dreamy feel. This is a bit more manipulated and artsy than most of my pictures, but I really do like the result.
