I always have a plan when traveling. I know what I want to see and the best route to get there. At the same time, I like to explore in a small group with the freedom to do just that – explore. Some of the most interesting experiences I have had have been because I have left the main streets and wandered into a small museum, gallery, or bar. Of course I want to see the main sights, but talking to locals and getting away from the traditional tourist areas are often the most memorable and rewarding experiences. Part of this is taking a side road or walking through a tunnel to see what lies on the other side.
In this picture there was just a courtyard through the tunnel, nothing that interesting. But I feel this picture expresses that feeling of adventure and curiosity. It was taken in Zagreb, Croatia and is off the main road with lots of bars and restaurants. I looked into the dark tunnel and saw the courtyard. I was surprised by how well the picture came out. I darkened the shadows and increased the whites somewhat to get the result. In addition, I sharpened the photo more than I usually do.
