Astronomy and space has always fascinated me. The beauty of nature as well. I was just outside walking and saw a beautiful deep blue sky with a sliver of a moon and Venus shining bright next to it. I wish I had had my camera and tripod with me to capture. By the time I got home, it was dark, but I still wanted to take the moon. Given I did not use a tripod, it’s not a bad shot.

I’ve posted before about sea gulls and in fact this very boat ride to Telašćica Nature Park in Croatia. I like this picture because it is full of action, you only can see a bit of what is going on, yet you can still imagine the entire scene. I can imagine the birds having a conversation. It is almost a landscape shot, but the action in the corner upsets it. I like images with some kind of disturbing factor in them. What do you think? Is the picture too lopsided? What does this image evoke in your mind?

Observing human behavior can be very interesting. What strikes me about this picture is that the two people are each holding cell phones. The woman is looking at her cell phone while talking. It is hard to imagine that just 10 years ago smartphones were not ubiquitous. It is easy to forget every single thing smartphones have replaced. One really has to take a step back to realize how much smartphones have changed social norms. I find that the conversation around modern communication methods are usually one sided. Social media companies talk about how wonderful their tools are, while critics predict the downfall of society. I don’t technology is inherently good or bad, how we use it decides it.

I cherish little relics of the past that live on today. The Kristallspiegelsaal, or crystal mirror hall, belongs to a hotel and restaurant in the town of Altenahr, Germany. In this small town in the Ahr Valley, tradition lives on. I wasn’t able to find out when the this opened, but it looks like early 1970’s to me. I think about all of the fun times that have been had here, the drunken dramas, the meals eaten together with friends and family. I also wonder how much longer a place like this will survive.

The glow of the Alps is soothing. In general, I find the mountains to be relaxing and peaceful. When stressed, I often shut my eyes and think of myself somewhere in the mountains. Living relatively close to the Alps, I have been able to visit them quite often. What I really like about this picture are the colors. The dark green at the bottom and the dark blue at the top in contrast with the pastel colors in between. The moon shines bright and the mountains are aglow. What is your peaceful place?
